Our Sicilian organic prickly pear extra jam is amber-colored and it has a delicious and lightly aromatic taste.

Try this jam and make your breakfast a fresh meal. It is ideal to garnish biscuits and tarts, and to be accompanied by sheep milk cheeses.  

The prickly pear is a native plant of South America. For centuries it has lived in Sicily where it has been perfectly acclimatized thanks to the climate and soil characteristics. Today this plant is considered as a symbol of the Sicilian landscape. Cultivated according to organic farming methods (no chemical agents), farmers harvest these fruits at the end of summer, after the first rainfalls, when the sugar content is very high. The harvest is traditionally called ‘accoppatura’, a Sicilian name deriving from a metal tool tied at the end of a staff  (‘coppu’) and used by farmers not to be stung by cactus needles. Once harvested, prickly pear fruits lay down on a basket covered by fig leaves or a cloth in order to avoid any skin damages. This fruit is rich in fibers, mineral salts, and natural antioxidants. After its harvest, this fruit is washed in water and peeled manually. The obtained pulp is sifted to eliminate seeds and preserved at very low temperatures to protect its aroma and taste.  After that, pulp is mixed with organic cane sugar and fruit pectin.

Our Sicilian organic prickly pear extra jam is realized only with natural and organic ingredients without the addition of fruit concentrate or colours. It is a hymn to Sicily and its tradition.
